5. Modelling the Effect of Dust on the Plasma Parameters in a Dusty Argon Dis- charge under Microgravity

چکیده
A dusty radio-frequency argon discharge is simulated with the use of a two-dimensional fluid model. In the model, discharge quantities as the fluxes, densities and electric field are calculated self-consistently. The charge and the density of the dust are calculated with an iterative method. During the transport of the dust, its charge is kept constant in time. The dust influences the electric potential distribution through its charge and the density of the plasma through recombination of positive ions and electrons on its surface. Results are presented for situations in which the dust significantly changes the discharge characteristics, both by a strong reduction of the electron density and by altering the electric potential by its charge. Simulations for dust with a radius of 7.5 microns show that a double space charge layer is created around the sharp boundary of the dust crystal. A central dust-free region (void) is created by the ion drag force. Inside this void a strong increase of the production of argon meta-stables is found. This phenomenon is in agreement with experimental observations, where an enhanced light emission is seen inside the void. Published in : Phys. Rev. E., Vol 67, 066407 (2003). Authors : M.R. Charge gradient effects on modulated dust lattice wave packets in dusty plasma crystals
Nonlinear Dust lattice modes are studied in a hexagonal two-dimensional dusty plasma lattice, in presence of charge gradient of dust particles. In this lattice, such gradients affect nonlinear behavior of dust lattice waves. The amplitude modulation of off-plane transverse dust lattice wave packets is investigated considering the anisotropy of interactions, caused by the height-dependent char...
متن کامل4. Modelling of Voids in Colloidal plasmas
A two dimensional fluid model for a dusty argon plasma in which the plasma and dust parameters are solved self-consistently, is used to study the behavior of voids, i.e., dust-free regions inside dust clouds. These voids appear in plasma crystal experiments performed under microgravity conditions. The ion drag force turns out to be the most promising driving force behind these voids. The contri...
متن کاملThe Temperature and Mass Effects on Dust Grain Electrical Potential in Dusty Plasma
By orbit-limited motion (OLM) theory and the kinetic model, currents carried by electronsand ions on the dust grain are obtained and the effects of temperature and drift velocity of ions on thedust grain electrical potential are considered. The calculations were performed for finding the role of densities of dust grains and ions on the dust grain electrical potential which is the ma...
متن کاملProbe induced voids in a dusty plasma
Dusty plasmas are susceptible to the formation of a ‘‘void,’’ a centimeter-size region within the plasma that is free of dust particles. The boundary between the dust-free plasma ~void! and the dusty plasma is typically quite sharp. Praburam and Goree first reported the appearance of a spoke-shaped, dust-free region in a cloud of 100-nm carbon particles in a radio-frequency discharge formed bet...
متن کاملThe project “Plasmakristall – 4” (PK–4) is a dusty plasma experiment in a combined dc/rf(i) discharge plasma under microgravity conditions
During the last decade decade there has been a continually growing interest to the complex dusty plasma physics [1], [2]. A dusty plasma is a low temperature plasma with immersed dust grains of micrometer size. These grains are quickly charged under plasma exposition and become by a component of the plasma. The main features of this component are the very large and variable electric charge (up ...
